A lack of subject teachers and the fact that pupils believe certain subjects are too difficult, result in an inadequate provision of these subjects. This means there are sometimes as few as five pupils in a class, and certain subjects are no longer viable.

To tackle this the Ministry of Education, Cultural Affairs and Science has launched a project entitled InnovatieImpuls Onderwijs (literally, Teaching Innovation Impulse) – an initiative supporting ideas for resolving pressure points financially. The staff of the Bataafs Lyceum took this as a challenge.
